Sindh govt responsible for Thar situation
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court, while declaring the Sindh government responsible for the Thar situation, has said that if the media had not highli red bottoms ghted the issue, it would have been swept under the carpet.
The report stated that 26 deaths were reported in December, 18 in January and 23 in February.”Most of these deaths have red bottoms occurred due to pneumonia, sepsis, birth asphyxia and very few from malnutrition. Sepsis is mainly due to use of unhygienic methods of delivery used by midwives and untrained local Daiees,” the report states further. According to the report, around 0.12 million wheat bags worth Rs429 million are being distributed amongst the affected people. “Around 80,000 bags have already been dispatched and received in the district.”
During the proceedings of the case, the Sindh Advocate General told the court that children in Tharparkar died due to cold. Parents don’t get their children treated until their condition gets critical, he added.
Our correspondent adds: Appearing on notice, Advocate General Sindh Fateh Malik acknowledged that there red bottoms was famine in Tharparkar, howev red bottoms er, he said that the media has exaggerated the situation. He contended that such a situation has not arisen for the first time.
